I started training dogs when I was eight years old. My first dog was a Border Collie, which meant I had to be good from the start. These dogs file away everything you do and act on it before you've even finished thinking. They didn't leave much room for imprecision.
Thirty-four years later, I've trained hundreds of family dogs. Specializing in not competition dogs or sport dogs, real dogs in real homes with real people trying to figure it out. I've also raised five dogs of my own, four alongside kids and a full life, so when I tell you I know what this actually looks like, I mean it.
I tend to describe myself as a relationship trainer. Not because it sounds good, but because it's actually what I do. I'm not here to win a debate about methodology. I'm here to help you understand your dog well enough that training stops feeling like a battle and starts feeling like a conversation. The relationship between you and your dog matters more to me than any method.
I built Year One because I kept watching families come to me at eight or nine months, not with bad dogs, but with dogs who had small gaps from puppyhood that had quietly grown into big problems. A missed socialization window. A habit that had been accidentally reinforced for months. Things that would have taken twenty minutes to fix in week three and took months to undo at month nine.
